Verdandi Camerata is a flexible and versatile musical ensemble, used to adapting to different circumstances and surroundings. Besides their concert work they also run international music summer schools and courses in London and Poland. The director is Vietnamese-Norwegian conductor and violinist, Khac-Uyen Nguyen.
He was the first Vietnamese musician to be selected for the Asian Youth Orchestra, soon after he arrived by boat as a refugee in Hong Kong carrying little more than his violin. He began his violin studies at the age of 5 in Vietnam, and went on to study at the Norwegian State Academy of Music and the Guildhall School, London. Joining him for this concert are his wife, Dominika Rosiek, his niece Martha, and fellow Vietnamese Phuong Nguyen with his wife Miho Sanou. Phuong is a classical accordion player who also came via Hong Kong and became one of the earliest students of the accordion at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
Both families, have, not surprisingly, always taken the musical education of their children seriously. And so it is that Mia, Anna-May, Ly-Anne and Ken – all still in their early and mid-teens – will also be making an appearance at the concert on April 3rd.
The main item in the hour-long programme will be Prokoviev’s “Peter and the Wolf” – an evergreen favourite – specially arranged for this occasion. But just as exciting will be the chance to hear some thrilling Argentine tango music by Piazzolla and others, music that was composed specifically for the accordion, and truly memorable.
