What is the Westbury Friendly Society?
The Westbury Friendly Society or just The Friendly Society, as it is known in the Village, is a Village organisation with a long tradition that in its current incarnation has the remit, according to its constitution, “to maintain the village rural traditions and enhance the wellbeing of residents of all ages, by supporting and promoting activities for the benefit of the community and, when funds allow, providing grants to Village organisations and individuals for community and personally enriching projects.”
When was it Formed?
Records of the Westbury Friendly Society have been found dating back to the late 18th century when it was set up as a means of supporting individuals and families that fell on hard times. Members paid into the Society for an agreed period, known as the ‘The Club’, and could then claim support if they became in need. At the end of ‘The Club’ any remaining assets were divided amongst the Members and a vote was taken on whether to form a new ‘Club’ and start the process again.
The Friendly Society has been through many incarnations to reflect changing times and needs. The current incarnation was started in the 1950’s, in a time when there was a Welfare State that aimed to replace the Society’s original purpose. So the Society’s emphasis moved from the individual to the community but retained a number of the original traditions such as The Club structure, currently 3 years, and Club Day held at the end of May.
What Activities does the Society run?
The Friendly Society organises events such as: Village Day, Easter Egg Hunt, Quiz Night, an Annual Draw and a Mystery Outing; and supports Apple Pressing and Wassail. Some of these events raise money others are supported for the benefit of the community.
What happens to the Money Raised?
The Friendly Society provides Grants to Individuals and Village Organisations to enable particular projects that enhance and benefit the local community to go ahead. As a gesture towards the early practice of paying members funeral costs, the Society still pays a small token contribution towards them. During the last Club a total of £1880 was paid in grants that helped a number of Village Groups such as The Westbury Tree Group, Bell ringers, the Community Shop and Footlights. In addition, due to the hardships caused by the Pandemic the Society set up a fund to support members of the community, and paid a total £1400 to a number of residents in need.
