An excellent evening, with The Handlebards eliciting gales of laughter from a large crowd. Many thanks to Westbury Footlights for organising and supporting this fun event.

Oh yes, we mustn’t forget to mention the Westbury residents who joined the cast…..

Parish Councillor Vacancy

Have you ever considered becoming a Parish Councillor? The role would suit anyone who cares about the wellbeing and future of our village community.

There are normally ten meetings every year, on Wednesday evenings, with agendas and reports sent to you beforehand for consideration.

Training is available from the Somerset Association of Local Councils for those who want it.

The formal election notice is here –

Casual Vacancy Notice

and the process is set by statute. There is a period of fourteen days in which electors can write to the Returning Officer at Mendip District Council requesting a poll. If ten or more electors do not request a poll, then the Parish Council will co-opt a Councillor. If you are interested in being co-opted you can express an interest immediately to any Councillor, or the Clerk by email at clerk@westburysubmendip-pc.gov.uk

If you just want more information, or to discuss the role further, please get in touch!

Westbury-sub-Mendip census returns for 1851, 1861 & 1871

The Westbury Society has hard copies of the complete census lists for 1851, 1861 & 1871.

If you’re interested in local history, or just want to find out who lived in your house back then, email us using the form at the bottom of the Westbury Society page to arrange to look at them.

As you can see from the photo of a sample page, they’re not that easy to decipher, but they are very rich in detail.

Westbury Pub welcomes new Landlord

Popped into the pub last night to welcome the new landlord Andy Jones. Speaking to Andy’s father, there are lots of plans in the making from a new kitchen to additional seating and tables and maybe a B&B rooms. Apparently the first action will the departure of the one arm bandit!

On Saturday night I understand Andy is hosting a buffet to welcome everyone and share some plans and hear what we would like to have. Must admit I would love to have a leisurely Sunday morning breakfast with the Sunday papers at the Westbury, with hopefully some good company.
